Dr. Reidar Wennesland
Reidar Wennesland was born in Kristiansand in 1908. After his examinations at
Kristiansand Katedralskole he studied Medicine. In 1947 he emigrated to the USA,
gradually acquiring his own practice in San Francisco. Even as a young student
he had collected art, and this he continued to do in California. This led to a
vast collection especially of contemporary art, first and foremost Beat Art.
Before his death in 1985 he donated much of his collection to Kristiansand Katedralskole and Agder University College. He preferred to see his pictures hung on the walls of a school, rather than be left to museums. As he said in an interview in Fædrelandsvennen when presenting his gift:
”In museums specially interested people drop in once in a while, while in schools the young can be surrounded by beautiful works of art. The paintings may inspire them, the young people will become aware of them and learn, their will grow curious and start discussions: What on earth does the artist mean by that picture?”
